Substance abuse and substance use disorders are significant problems that cause continual chaos within individuals, families, and communities nationwide and throughout Pennsylvania and the Northeast. Health issues, psychological upset, family conflict, automobile accidents, crime, domestic violence, and other personal and societal issues can result from the abuse of substances.
Substance abuse can involve a wide range of behaviors, such as abusing a legal substance like alcohol, purposefully abusing a medication that has been provided by a healthcare professional, and consuming illegal drugs like cocaine or heroin. Regardless of their differences, all types of substance abuse share one commonality: Whenever an individual abuses alcohol or another substance, he or she puts him or herself in jeopardy of suffering from a number of immediate and long-term consequences.
When an individual becomes dependent on alcohol or another substance, his or her chances of experiencing negative outcomes increases significantly. Depending on the nature and severity of an individual’s substance use disorder, defeating this dependence can be nearly impossible without professional treatment at a reputable addiction rehab center. Thankfully, a comprehensive residential rehab center, such as Huntington Creek Recovery Center, exists and can be effective in the effort to help individuals, in Pennsylvania & the Northeast, defeat their substance use disorders and continue their journey towards happiness and good health.
Realizing that a friend or a loved one has developed a substance use disorder can be very upsetting. It is normal to feel frustrated, sad, confused, or even angry. However, it is essential that you do not let these emotions dictate your role in helping your loved one obtain rehab for a substance use disorder.
Similar to any major challenge, it is imperative to obtain as much information as possible to best understand the problem at hand. This information can include learning about the substance that your loved one has been abusing, the length and severity of his or her abuse, and the effects that can develop. The more information that you gather about your loved one’s challenges, the more prepared you will be to offer meaningful help.
When you are aware of the substance or substances that your loved one is abusing, learn as much as you can about the following:
- How to speak to your loved one about his or her addiction
- The signs and symptoms associated with his or her addiction
- Addiction rehab centers that can offer the type of care your loved one requires
- Types of treatments that are proven to be effective in treating your loved one’s addiction
- The physical and mental impact that your loved one’s substance abuse can have on him or her
- The disease of addiction
When your loved one accepts treatment, plan to remain a constant, active member of his or her recovery. If possible, engage in family therapy or other services at his or her rehab center. Prepare yourself to help support your loved one post-treatment. Recovery is a life-long effort and your continuous support can make all the difference.
Why Consider Treatment at Huntington Creek Recovery Center in the Northeast
It is hard to express the amount of destruction that substance abuse can have on one’s life. Possible physical problems stemming from substance abuse can include vision problems, changes in brain structure, liver and kidney damage, cardiovascular damage, an increased risk for certain cancers, and hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS. The psychological damage that can ensue can include problems focusing or concentrating, diminished cognitive capacity, memory problems, and a number of co-occurring mental health conditions. Moving past one’s mind and body, continual untreated substance abuse can undermine one’s family life, social life, and other relationships. Additionally, it can also lead to unemployment, which can cause financial strife. Homelessness, incarceration, and arrest are also probable outcomes for those who abuse substances.
Not obtaining the appropriate rehab, from a reputable treatment center, for a substance use disorder can dramatically destroy all areas of one’s life. However, it does not have to be this way. With proven-effective treatment offered by professionals at a licensed addiction center, individuals can defeat their compulsions to abuse alcohol and/or other substances, and can make the changes needed that will support a happier, healthier, life in recovery.[important position=”none” ] If you feel that you are in crisis, or are having thoughts about hurting yourself or others, please call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.[/important]

All of these individuals are experts in their fields and provide a level of kindness and empathy that helps individuals truly overcome their challenges. In addition, all of the staff members at Huntington Creek Recovery Center are required to meet a number of hours for continuing education, which means that they are knowledgeable in the advances that are being made in the treatment of addictions and co-occurring disorders. This allows patients the comfort of knowing that they are receiving the best care possible. Furthermore, a staff member is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is designed to focus on trauma as it relates to addiction.
Each patient who receives care at our addiction rehab center in Pennsylvania benefits from the creation of an individualized treatment plan that is crafted specifically to meet his or her needs, concerns, and treatment goals. The following may be included in these individualized treatment plans when individuals are working to overcome an addiction:
Detoxification services: When individuals come to Huntington Creek Recovery Center with substances of abuse actively in their systems, they will typically need to begin the treatment process by first participating in detoxification services. Also known as detox, this process allows individuals to have drugs or alcohol effectively removed from their bodies while remaining as comfortable as possible. The detox staff at Huntington Creek Recovery Center consists of a medical director, a physician’s assistant, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses, who all work to ensure the safety of each patient. While receiving care in the detox unit, patients will also be afforded full access to the clinical treatment program.
Medication management: Individuals who are suffering from symptoms of a co-occurring mental health disorder in addition to their battle with an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol may require certain medications in order to alleviate their distressing symptoms. During their first week at our rehab center, patients will receive an assessment from a psychologist which will determine whether or not they are in need of medication or would benefit from further sessions with the psychologist. If medications are prescribed, the medical director and nurses will provide medication management services.
Individual therapy: Individual therapy sessions occur in a one-to-one forum where a patient meets confidentially with his or her primary counselor. When struggling with an addiction, individual therapy sessions can be an ideal place for patients to process through what they are learning in addiction rehab, as well as to discuss any concerns they have or any trials they are facing. These sessions are held at least two or three times per week.
Group therapy: Group therapy is another extremely beneficial medium for individuals who are working on recovering from an addiction. In this setting, patients can benefit from being surrounded by peers who are facing challenges that are similar to their own. This can serve to provide a sense of comfort as men and women come to realize that they are not alone in their struggles, and therefore do not have to feel isolated. It can also be an optimal setting for individuals to give and receive support and encouragement to and from one another. Group therapy sessions are held daily and can include the following:
- Open therapy groups
- Trauma group
- Psychoeducational groups
- Coping skills group
- Anxiety group
- Gender-specific groups
- 12-Step topic groups
All of the group topics are patient-driven, meaning that the topics discussed will be catered to the individuals who are participating in the group. As such, additional, substance-specific groups can be held, such as opioid-specific groups, alcohol-specific groups, etc.
Family therapy: Family therapy sessions are conducted by either a patient’s primary counselor or a family therapist and are held on an as-needed basis depending on each person’s individualized treatment plan at our rehab center. Pending the patient’s consent, his or her family members can be updated on his or her treatment progress each week. Additionally, family members are highly encouraged to be involved in rehab during weekly family visits. During visitation time, family members will also have the opportunity to participate in an educational lecture, though it is not required.
Experiential therapy: In order to offer patients the opportunity to receive a holistic approach to care, Huntington Creek Recovery Center implements a number of experiential therapies into the overall course of programming when individuals are working to overcome an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. Examples of such therapeutic interventions can include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Mini golfing
- Biofeedback bed
- Team-building exercises
- Patient outings
- Campfire groups
- AA meetings
- NA meetings
- Gym time
- Nature walks
Additionally, a ropes course is included in the experiential therapy options offered at our addiction rehab center. The ropes course can be viewed as a tangible way of confronting the obstacles that individuals face in early addiction rehab. Working together, patients can develop communication skills, enhance team-building abilities, learn to give and receive constructive criticism, and learn how to utilize a support group. This can be a wonderful way for patients to learn to combat their addictions head-on and feel confident in their ability to maintain sobriety.
Because the road to lasting sobriety is not one that ends upon the completion of treatment, the staff at Huntington Creek Recovery Center is dedicated to providing patients with thorough discharge planning so that the gains they made in rehab will continue to be expanded upon. As such, the aftercare planning is viewed as a critical part of rehab and begins within the first week of a patient’s admission into treatment. As a part of the assessment process, the treatment team will consult about what the best environment for each patient’s recovery may be. They pay special attention to the barriers that may exist in the patient’s ability to achieve recovery from an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol, and are careful to arrange aftercare plans accordingly. Several factors are taken into consideration when planning aftercare, which may include financial resources available to the patient, the stability of his or her home environment, the progress that he or she makes in treatment, any potential legal concerns, his or her motivation for recovery, the need for follow-up medical care that may include medication assisted treatment options, and the presence of any co-occurring disorders. By receiving this comprehensive continuing care plan, patients can feel confident in facing any challenges that they have when they return home, which ultimately helps them maintain sobriety in their own environment.
By participating in the care offered at Huntington Creek Recovery Center, the men and women of Pennsylvania and the Northeast can overcome their destructive behaviors and return to a life that is free of the compulsion to use substances. Do not continue to let substance abuse rule your or your loved one’s life; get help today.
