OxyContin is a prescription painkiller that is used in the treatment of moderate to severe physical pain that develops following an injury, surgery, a chronic pain condition, or pain that comes along with certain medical illnesses. When used as directed and under the supervision of a professional, OxyContin can offer much-needed alleviation for many. However, the fact that this substance also induces feelings of relaxation, sedation, and euphoria makes it attractive to those who do not need it for medical purposes. As this drug becomes consumed on a regular basis, tolerance can develop, which can cause users to have to consume more and more of it in an effort to achieve the same desired effects. The result of this tolerance can be physical dependence, which can cause users to suffer immense difficulty in stopping their dangerous behaviors. Thankfully, there are treatment options that are especially designed to help individuals cease their use of OxyContin once and for all.

At Huntington Creek Recovery Center in Pennsylvania, we recognize how hard it can be to defeat an addiction to any substance, including OxyContin. In order to help the men and women of the Northeast obtain the skills needed to overcome this addiction and continue healthy functioning, we have established specialized programming that can help individuals take the first steps towards a life of recovery.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for OxyContin addiction

When someone is addicted to any type of substance, it can be hard for his or her family members and loved ones to come to terms with it. If you care for someone who has developed an OxyContin addiction, then you are likely suffering with a number of your own emotions surrounding his or her possible inability to stop this dangerous behavior. It is imperative to know that there are a number of ways in which you can help your loved one, including:

  • Research OxyContin, including the symptoms, signs, and effects of its use. Becoming familiar with information such as this can help you prepare for speaking with your loved one.
  • Learn about addiction as a disease. When someone you love is struggling with an addiction, it can be very hard to understand why he or she cannot just stop. Obtaining an education about how addiction develops and why it is hard to defeat can help reduce some of the frustration that you are experiencing and help you develop a sense of empathy for your loved one.
  • Spend time looking into treatment options and local addiction rehab centers that have proven to be effective in helping individuals overcome addictions to medications like OxyContin. In doing this, you can help determine which level of care is most beneficial for your loved one, as well as provide you with information that you can offer your loved one.
  • Speak to your loved one. This is critical, and at the same time perhaps the most challenging. It is not uncommon for individuals who are using to become defensive or deny that they have a problem. By anticipating this response, you can be ready to make this conversation as easy as possible. Do not partake in any arguments and do not make ultimatums or threats. Stay calm and share your concerns in a manner that is non-judgmental. Share with your loved one the information that you have uncovered regarding potential rehab options. Do not plan on him or her agreeing to treatment right away, however remain active in encouraging him or her until that decision is made.
  • As soon as your loved one has decided to go to rehab, remain supportive and encouraging for him or her. Call to speak to him or her, attend family therapy sessions, and do what you can to remain present for him or her.

The following may be included in these individualized treatment plans when individuals are working to overcome an addiction to OxyContin:

Detoxification services: When individuals come to rehab center with substances of abuse actively in their systems, such as OxyContin, they will typically need to begin the treatment process by first participating in detoxification services. Also known as detox, this process allows individuals to have drugs or alcohol effectively removed from their bodies while remaining as comfortable as possible. The detox staff at Huntington Creek Recovery Center consists of a medical director, a physician’s assistant, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses, who all work to ensure the safety of each patient. While receiving care in the detox unit, patients will also be afforded full access to the clinical treatment program.

Medication management: Individuals who are suffering from symptoms of a co-occurring mental health disorder in addition to their battle with OxyContin addiction may require certain medications in order to alleviate their distressing symptoms. During their first week in programming, patients will receive an assessment from a psychologist which will determine whether or not they are in need of medication or would benefit from further sessions with the psychologist. If medications are prescribed, the medical director and nurses will provide medication management services.

Individual therapy: Individual therapy sessions occur in a one-to-one forum where a patient meets confidentially with his or her primary counselor. When struggling with an addiction to OxyContin, individual therapy sessions can be an ideal place for patients to process through what they are learning in treatment, as well as to discuss any concerns they have or any trials they are facing. These sessions are held at least two or three times per week.

Group therapy: Group therapy is another extremely beneficial medium for individuals who are working on recovering from an addiction to OxyContin. In this setting, patients can benefit from being surrounded by peers who are facing challenges that are similar to their own. This can serve to provide a sense of comfort as men and women come to realize that they are not alone in their struggles, and therefore do not have to feel isolated. It can also be an optimal setting for individuals to give and receive support and encouragement to and from one another. Group therapy sessions are held daily and can include the following:

  • Gender-specific groups
  • 12-Step topic groups
  • Open therapy groups
  • Coping skills group
  • Anxiety group
  • Trauma group
  • Psychoeducational groups

All of the group topics are patient-driven, meaning that the topics discussed will be catered to the individuals who are participating in the group. As such, additional, substance-specific groups can be held, such as opioid-specific groups, alcohol-specific groups, etc.

Experiential therapy: In order to offer patients the opportunity to receive a holistic approach to care, Huntington Creek Recovery Center implements a number of experiential therapies into the overall course of programming when individuals are working to overcome an addiction to OxyContin or other substances. Examples of such therapeutic interventions can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Hiking
  • Patient outings
  • Campfire groups
  • Acupuncture
  • Biofeedback bed
  • AA meetings
  • NA meetings
  • Gym time
  • Basketball
  • Volleyball

Additionally, a ropes course is included in the experiential therapy options offered at our addiction rehab center. The ropes course can be viewed as a tangible way of confronting the obstacles that individuals face in early recovery. Working together, patients can develop communication skills, enhance team-building abilities, learn to give and receive constructive criticism, and learn how to utilize a support group. This can be a wonderful way for patients to learn to combat their addictions to OxyContin head-on and feel confident in their ability to maintain sobriety.

Several factors are taken into consideration when planning aftercare, which may include financial resources available to the patient, the stability of his or her home environment, the progress that he or she makes in rehab, any potential legal concerns, his or her motivation for recovery, the need for follow-up medical care that may include medication assisted treatment options, and the presence of any co-occurring disorders.
