Fentanyl is a highly addictive and potent opioid that, while helpful to those who require it for the alleviation of severe pain, can rapidly trap a person in its web if it is misused. Additionally, there presently exists synthetic, illicit, and even more potent versions of fentanyl that are mixed with other substances, and can also bring about its own detrimental effects when abused. These substances of abuse can both cause individuals to become chemically dependent upon them and make seeking treatment, from a reputable addiction rehab center, a necessity if one wants to reclaim his or her life from these potentially lethal drugs.

How to Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for fentanyl addiction
Making the discovery or being told that someone you care about has been abusing fentanyl or a derivative of this medication can be quite overwhelming. You may not understand why and how this important person in your life came to abuse this type of substance, and you may even be unsure as to what you can do to help your loved one or family member during this difficult time.
However, as someone who cares, there are some steps that you can take to help this individual get the treatment he or she do desperately needs:
- Become educated on the signs, symptoms, and effects of fentanyl and/or synthetic fentanyl.
- Enlist the assistance of others who are close to the individual so that a safety plan can be in place in the event your loved one or family member is in need of immediate treatment as a result of his or her substance abuse.
- Talk with your loved one or family member to better understand what he or she is going through. Have this conversation with an open mind, but be sure to also convey your own worry while speaking with him or her.
- Consult with an addiction professional or contact rehab centers to learn about the options for treatment that have helped others defeat an addiction to fentanyl and synthetic fentanyl. Compile a list of treatment options to present to your loved one or family member at a later time.
- Speak again with your loved one, but this time with the goal of helping him or her get treatment. Present your list of treatment options and offer to assist him or her in engaging in a form a care.
Finally, be sure to convey your intentions of support for your loved one or family member. Overcoming an addiction can feel like a lonely experience for many. However, by communicating how you plan on playing an active role in your loved one or family member’s life, the person you care about is more likely to be successful in his or her healing and recovery processes.
Why Consider Treatment
Why consider treatment for fentanyl addiction at Huntington Creek Recovery Center in the Northeast
Foregoing treatment and remaining addicted to fentanyl, or another synthetic form of this substance, can mean that an individual is bound to experience a great deal of pain and strife within his or her life. Because these types of substances are excessively potent drugs of abuse, chemical dependency is likely to develop fast, which could cause a drastic, downward spiral to occur. Numerous health concerns, psychological anguish, loss of employment, financial strain, and increased interaction with law enforcement are probable.
Additionally, it is highly likely that an individual will experience familial discord, social isolation, and the loss of meaningful relationships as a result of regularly abusing fentanyl or other derivatives of this medication. Because of these detrimental effects, it is important for a person to consider seeking care and receive services from a reputable addiction rehab center to overcome this form of chemical dependency once and for all. In doing so, these, and other such adversities, can be successfully mitigated all together.

Each patient who receives care at our addiction rehab center benefits from the creation of an individualized treatment plan that is crafted specifically to meet his or her needs, concerns, and treatment goals. The following may be Included in these individualized treatment plans when individuals are working to overcome an addiction to fentanyl and/or synthetic fentanyl:
Detoxification services: When individuals come to Huntington Creek Recovery Center with substances of abuse actively in their systems, such as fentanyl or derivatives of fentanyl, they will typically need to begin the treatment process by first participating in detoxification services. Also known as detox, this process allows individuals to have drugs or alcohol effectively removed from their bodies while remaining as comfortable as possible. The detox staff at our rehab center consists of a medical director, a physician’s assistant, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses, who all work to ensure the safety of each patient. While receiving care in the detox unit, patients will also be afforded full access to the clinical treatment program.
Medication management: Individuals who are suffering from symptoms of a co-occurring mental health disorder, in addition to their battle with fentanyl and/or synthetic fentanyl addiction, may require certain medications in order to alleviate their distressing symptoms. During their first week at our addiction rehab center, patients will receive an assessment from a psychologist which will determine whether or not they are in need of medication, or would benefit from further sessions with the psychologist. If medications are prescribed, the medical director and nurses will provide medication management services.
Individual therapy: Individual therapy sessions occur in a one-to-one forum where a patient meets confidentially with his or her primary counselor. When struggling with an addiction to fentanyl or derivatives of fentanyl, individual therapy sessions can be an ideal place for patients to process through what they are learning in rehab, as well as to discuss any concerns they have or any trials they are facing. These sessions are held at least two or three times per week.
Group therapy: Group therapy is another extremely beneficial medium for individuals who are working on recovering from an addiction to fentanyl and/or synthetic fentanyl. In this setting, patients can benefit from being surrounded by peers who are facing challenges that are similar to their own. This can serve to provide a sense of comfort as men and women come to realize that they are not alone in their struggles, and therefore do not have to feel isolated. It can also be an optimal setting for individuals to give and receive support and encouragement to and from one another. Group therapy sessions are held daily and can include the following:
- Trauma group
- Psychoeducational groups
- Coping skills group
- Anxiety group
- Gender-specific groups
- 12-Step topic groups
- Open therapy groups
All of the group topics are patient-driven, meaning that the topics discussed will be catered to the individuals who are participating in the group. As such, additional, substance-specific groups can be held, such as opioid-specific groups, alcohol-specific groups, etc.
Family therapy: Family therapy sessions are conducted by either a patient’s primary counselor or a family therapist and are held on an as-needed basis depending on each person’s individualized treatment plan. Pending the patient’s consent, his or her family members can be updated on his or her treatment progress each week. Additionally, family members are highly encouraged to be involved in treatment during weekly family visits. During visitation time, family members will also have the opportunity to participate in an educational lecture, though it is not required.
Experiential therapy: In order to offer patients the opportunity to receive a holistic approach to care, Huntington Creek Recovery Center implements a number of experiential therapies into the overall course of programming when individuals are working to overcome an addiction to fentanyl or derivatives of fentanyl or other substances. Examples of such therapeutic interventions can include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Nature walks
- Mini golfing
- Team-building exercises
- Patient outings
- Campfire groups
- Biofeedback bed
- AA meetings
- NA meetings

Working together, patients can develop communication skills, enhance team-building abilities, learn to give and receive constructive criticism, and learn how to utilize a support group. This type of therapy can be a wonderful way for patients to learn to combat their addictions to fentanyl or synthetic fentanyl head-on and feel confident in their ability to maintain sobriety.
Continuing care and levels of treatment for fentanyl addiction
Because the road to lasting sobriety is not one that ends upon the completion of treatment, the staff at Huntington Creek Recovery Center in Pennsylvania is dedicated to providing patients with thorough discharge planning so that the gains they made in treatment will continue to be expanded upon. As such, the aftercare planning is viewed as a critical part of programming and begins within the first week of a patient’s admission into treatment.
As a part of the assessment process, the treatment team will consult about what the best environment for each patient’s recovery may be. They pay special attention to the barriers that may exist in the patient’s ability to achieve recovery from an addiction to fentanyl or synthetic fentanyl, and are careful to arrange aftercare plans accordingly.
Several factors are taken into consideration when planning aftercare, which may include financial resources available to the patient, the stability of his or her home environment, the progress that he or she makes in treatment, any potential legal concerns, his or her motivation for recovery, the need for follow-up medical care that may include medication assisted treatment options, and the presence of any co-occurring disorders.
